On May 8, 2018, Lyft driver Tina Turrieta gave notice of her intention to bring a claim against Lyft under the California Private Attorney General Act. The lawsuit deals with Lyft’s failure to provide employees with benefits and protections required by the California Wage Order. Among the benefits that Lyft has denied its drivers are overtime and reimbursement of expenses for mileage and cell phone use.
The case is based in part on a recent decision by the California Supreme Court which prevents companies like Lyft from treating employees as independent contractors when those workers are performing tasks that are a normal part of the company’s business.
